Dan E. Burr is a multi-disciplined, award winning graphic illustrator and cartoonist. He is known for his work on the widely acclaimed and celebrated graphic novel, KINGS IN DISGUISE (written by James Vance and published by W. W. Norton). The novel, set in 1932 America during the Great Depression, won several Eisner and Harvey awards and garnered praise from Time, American Heritage, Entertainment Weekly, the New York Times Book Review, the Comics Journal and the Guardian. Danny Fingeroth in his book , THE ROUGH GUIDE TO GRAPHIC NOVELS, lists it among the "Ten Graphic Novels Everyone Should Read."

Dan is also known as the graphic illustrator for the book, ECONOMIX: How our Economy Works (And Doesn't Work) In Words and Pictures (written by Michael Goodwin and published by Abrams Books). Shortly after its debut, ECONOMIX appeared on the New York Times best seller list of graphic books and paperbacks. It has received praise from, among others, Wired, Publishers Weekly and Mother Jones. Additional work created with Michael can be seen at economixcomix.com.
A sequel to KINGS IN DISGUISE (again written by James Vance) titled ON THE ROPES was published by W.W. Norton in 2013. It received high praise from the Los Angeles Times, Publishers Weekly ("A depression-era story as layered and encompassing as the classics of Steinbeck or James M. Cain."), and the Watchmen team of Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore. Alan Moore: "... James Vance and Dan Burr's ON THE ROPES is that most rare of animals, a sequel that's as powerful, as vital and as necessary as the work which it continues. The pair's earlier study of depression-wracked America, the luminous KINGS IN DISGUISE, here sees its characters and themes magnificently resurrected in a mesmerizing drama which, as surely as its predecessor, nails the era's flat broke beating heart in all its pettiness, its torment and its awesome, overwhelming decency. A quietly epic human tale which beautifully and expertly employs the comic medium in its telling, ON THE ROPES is very possibly the most affecting graphic narrative that you will read in the next couple of decades."

In 2014, Dan was nominated for a National Cartoonists Society Division Award in the Graphic Novel category for his work on ON THE ROPES.
Other comics work include illustrated stories for DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Graphic Classics, Kitchen Sink Press and Eclipse Comics.
His comics work has been reprinted in a number of international countries and has been included in the following exhibitions:

  • Wisconsin Funnies: West Bend, Wisconsin, 2020-2021
  • Art of the Graphic Novel: Marymount College, Manhattan, New York, 2010-2011
  • Comics as Art: University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, 1995
  • Museum of Cartoon Art, Port Chester, New York, 1994

In both comics and editorial work he has displayed a strong ability to capture historical details and subtleties.

Examples of editorial work, done primarily for newspaper and magazine articles, can be seen in the editorial, portrait, caricature and miscellaneous galleries. Many of the editorial assignments have involved portraits or caricatures. Dan is regarded as highly skilled in this area and can be counted on to interpret subjects with accuracy and sensitivity.

His work in the children's market has been published by Western Publishing/Golden Books, Modern Publishing, Landoll's and Publications International.
